Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of blasting treatment with zirconia/hydroxyapatite powders on the surface roughness, in vitro bioactivity and wear behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy (Grade V).

Design/methodology/approach

Ti6Al4V specimens were sandblasted with ZrO2 and HA [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] powders in a commercial blasting cabinet. Surface analysis was performed evaluating eroded surfaces by scanning electron microscopy. Roughness surface analysis of the samples was performed with a surface roughness tester and in vitro bioactivity of titanium surfaces was examined in the simulated body fluid (SBF) solution before and after blasting. Wear resistance is evaluated by the weight loss during the test.

Findings

The highest value of surface roughness is obtained with a mixture of 25 percent ZrO2+75 percent HA (Z25). Z25 exhibited also lower weight loss than Ti6Al4V and other treated samples. These results indicate that surface treatment with 25 percent ZrO2+75 percent HA provides the highest amount of HA adhesion on the surface of Ti6Al4V implant. Finally, the sample surfaces were contacted with SBF solutions for seven days, and Ca/P accumulation was identified on the blasted surfaces. ZrO2/HA blasting method can be used to improve the wear characteristics and the biocompatibility of the implant materials.

Originality/value

The paper provides information about the effect of ZrO2/HA blasting treatment on the surface properties, in vitro bioactivity and wear behavior of Ti6Al4V implant materials.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to investigate perceptions of Turkish nurses on the impact of accreditation on quality of care and the effect of accreditation on quality results.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was performed as a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey on 258 nurses who started working in the hospital before it was accredited and continued to work during and after accrediation and who therefore knew both the hospital's pre-accrediation and post-accreditation periods. In this study, descriptive statistical analyses (means and standard deviations) were carried out to explore the views of the participants on “quality results,” “benefits of accreditation” and “participation of employees.” “Quality results” was considered to be the dependent variable, while “benefits of accreditation” and “participation of employees” were accepted as the independent variables. The relationship between the dependent variable and the independent variables was tested using Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis. External patient satisfaction data collected by the quality department of the hospital before and after accreditation were also investigated.

Findings

It was found that nurses had generally high scores for the items concerning the benefits of accreditation. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the dependent variable (quality results) and the independent variables (benefits of accreditation and participation of employees). Regression analysis indicated that R2=0.461 and the extent to which the independent variables explained the dependent variable was 46.1 per cent, which is a high rate. Patient satisfaction scores increased after accreditation.

Practical implications

Our study suggest that providing support for nurses, especially nurses with administrative responsibilities and incorporating employees into the process are important for exercising quality standards.

Originality/value

Hospital accreditation has a positive impact on quality results especially on quality of care provided to patients and patient satisfaction. Study findings could guide policy makers and hospital managers in Turkey and in other countries who are preparing or implementing accreditation.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of canines in the gathering of evidence is a valuable tool for law enforcement to discover crime and criminals. Narcotics, explosives, cadaver detection, search and rescue, or patrol dogs are prevalently used by most police organizations for combatting crime. Police service dogs decrease the time required and increase success in crime detection. The purpose of this paper is to review the different fields of police service dog training programs, to investigate their implementation abroad and compare them to Turkey.

Design/methodology/approach

Various dog training methods are discussed, prior to the fields of police dog service. Research about the official units and legal procedures abroad are reported. The situation in Turkey is specified. As a representative in the field, The Dog Training Center of the Turkish National Police is examined. The overall comparison between Turkey and other countries is made and the paper concludes with an evaluation of future prospects.

Findings

For a better and successful fight against crime in Turkey, it is recommended that the standards concerning training and certification of the dog and the handler should be determined; an effective and accurate education should be given to the handlers so that they might better train service dogs for the security needs of private bodies such as companies and firms.

Originality/value

The paper shows that a more scientific approach will lead to the formation of standards in dog training and provide a successful way to fight crime by increasing efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a novel cross (+) type yoke with hybrid electromagnets and new reluctance modeling to precisely calculate attraction force is given.

Design/methodology/approach

The comparison of attraction force and torque analyses between the proposed formulation and the existing formulation in the literature is comparatively presented. For the correctness of the force and torque values calculated in the model created, the system was created in ANSYS Maxwell and its accuracy was proved by making analyses. The maglev carrier system is inherently unstable from the point of view of control engineering. For that, it needs an active controller to eliminate this instability. For the levitation of the carrier system, it is necessary to design a controller in three axes (z, α and β). I-PD controller was designed for the air gap control of the carrier system in three axes and the controller parameters were determined by the canonical method.

Findings

While the new formulation proposed in the modeling of the carrier system has a maximum error of 1.03%, the existing formula in the literature has an error of 16.83% in the levitation distance point.

Originality/value

A novel cross-type hybrid carrier system has been proposed in the literature. With the double integral used in modeling the system, it takes a long time to solve symbolically, and it is difficult to simulate dynamic behavior in control validation. To solve this problem, attraction force and inclination torque values are easily characterized by new formulation and besides the simulations are conducted easily. The experimental setup was manufactured and assembled, and the carrier system was successfully levitated, and reference tracking was performed without overshoot.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a self-managed career model, in which protean and boundaryless careers were used.

Design/methodology/approach

A hybrid methodology is proposed where Buckley’s fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) method was used for prioritization of these criteria, sub-criteria, and indicators, and fuzzy TOPSIS method was used to select the most appropriate career path for a given individual.

Findings

The hybrid model for self-managed career was tested with a real numerical example. Findings were congruent with the example’s current career and future career aspirations.

Research limitations/implications

The model was tested with one numerical example. The model could be applied to individuals from various cultures, age groups and backgrounds to further discuss its validity.

Originality/value

Career decisions are affected from individuals’ values and perceptions. New career orientations like Protean and Boundaryless Career are built upon this fact to include subjectivity. Because of the shortcomings of traditional methods to deal with uncertainty related to subjective evaluations, a FAHP and fuzzy TOPSIS based hybrid multi-attribute decision-support model was utilized to help individuals with their career decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to discover the underlying reasons for the failure of solar energy architecture in Turkey in order to be able suggest methods of improving it in Turkey and worldwide.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology employed in this research is on‐site observations of Turkish solar houses built with respect to the details of their application, and depiction of heat gains provided with applied solar measures, and to compare them with an ideal gauge to determine the deficiencies involved in applications.

Findings

The investigations discovered that various buildings under consideration share several errors. In order of importance, these items are: faulty applications, erroneous choice of methods and lack of precautions in the summer.

Practical implications

The practical implications of the study are that measures must be taken to prevent heat loss during winter nights; outer walls with a resistance to heat transmission of u=1 W/m2K would have been preferred rather than ordinary old‐fashioned Trombe walls; in order to prevent overheating the surfaces of the sunspaces, Trombe walls and air collectors contacting the outer environment need to be made movable or pliable to avoid sinking of heated air into the sunspace.

Social implications

The social implication of the study is that only continued exploration into solar energy use via exemplary practice may encourage adoption of these systems by society itself.

Originality/value

The value of the research resides in translating knowledge gained from previous solar projects into design aspects which are expected to avoid these errors and deficiencies, demonstrated herein through Malatya solar housing, from which everyone involved in passive solar house design may benefit.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, we have collected the response from 200 private university lecturers in Kurdistan Region of Iraq. In order to test the hypotheses, we have proposed structural equations modeling (SEM).

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the direct and indirect effects of e-service quality on perceived value, satisfaction and willingness to pay for online meeting platforms in the education sector. This study also explores the effect of e-service quality on users' perception and satisfaction.

Findings

The results reveal that e-service quality directly affects the perceived value and satisfaction but has no direct effect on the willingness to pay. Secondly, perceived value and satisfaction mediated the relationships between service quality and willingness to pay. However, it is observed that perceived value has a more significant impact on the willingness to pay compared to satisfaction. It is further reported that perceived value is one of the antecedents of satisfaction. The study also explores the direct relationship between perceived value and willingness to pay, and introduces satisfaction as a mediating variable between perceived value and willingness to pay.

Research limitations/implications

The sample is geographically limited as only online faculty and staff working at private universities participated in the study. This study has implications for administrators of higher educational institutions and companies providing IT solutions for online meetings. From a managerial standpoint, this study provides and IT companies a broad theoretical basis that designing a successful online meeting platform should specifically emphasize e-service quality, perceived value and customer satisfaction.

Originality/value

There is no study that evaluated the links among e-service quality, value, satisfaction, and willingness to pay for the online meeting platform services. Therefore, this study is useful for the private university administration and online meeting platform developers and investors.

Abstract

The terms cyprus, conflict, crisis and war have been almost inextricably intertwined throughout the history of this Mediterranean island. The education system played an important role socially and school buildings played an important role visually first in the dissemination of nationalism when the ethno-nationalist movements within the turkish and greek-cypriot communities increased dramatically under British colonial rule (1878-1960), and later in the dissemination of internationalism in the mid-twentieth century. Despite the increased conflict and nationalism, which was reflected by neo-greek architectural elements, the striking impact of the international style turned school buildings into representations of the communities' attitudes towards modernism. By the mid-1940s these attitudes towards modernism also served as a latent way for communities' identity struggles and for the sovereignty of each community to exist. After world war ii the style embodied by many school buildings conveyed science-based modern thought; modernization attempts for political, economic and social reforms; and the strong commitment of the first modernist cypriot architects to the spirit of the time and the philosophy of the modern. Under this scope, postwar school buildings in cyprus are identified as unique artifacts transformed from an ‘ethnicity-based' image into an ‘environment-based' form that is more associated with the modernization, decolonization and nation-building processes from which local nuances of mainstream modernism emerged. At this point the modernization process of the state, identity struggles of the communities and architects' modernist attempts could be interpreted as providing a fertile ground for new social and architectural experiments, and could answer questions about how postwar school architecture managed to avoid reference to historical, ethnic and religious identities when there was an intentional exacerbation of hostility between the two ethnic communities and about school buildings predominantly followed principles of the international style even though both the greek and turkish-cypriot education systems were instrumental in strengthening local nationalisms and even ethnic tensions.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the current pandemic, the importance of logistics functions and decisions is well understood both at the level of companies and users. Logistics systems and related decisions are of vital importance in making supply chains effective, efficient and without disruption. Logistic pressure factors may emerge at different points along the logistics process, and given the role of logistics decisions as one of the important indicators of competitiveness, the determination of the logistics pressures that are likely to increase the costs of business, and their causative factors are a vital aspect of the logistics decision-making process. The study aims to provide assistance in the selection of the most ideal logistics decision by ranking the pressure factors affecting the logistics system, especially during the pandemic period for logistics enterprises operating in Ordu and Giresun provinces and which have a corporate identity.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, it is aimed to make the most ideal logistics decision selection by ranking the pressure factors affecting the logistics system, especially during the pandemic period for the logistics enterprises operating in Ordu and Giresun provinces and having a corporate identity. For that purpose interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy (IVPF)–analytic hierarchy process (AHP) based combinative distance-based assessment (CODAS) methodology was used. Additionally sensitivity and comparison analysis were discussed.

Findings

Competitive pressure was found as the most important pressure factor affecting the logistics system during the pandemic period. Change in regulatory rules was the pressure factor found to have the least effect on the logistics system. Using the weights of logistics pressure factors, “Operational Decisions” was found to be the most ideal logistics decision selection.

Research limitations/implications

The findings provide support for the evaluation of logistical pressures and decision options by presenting a decision model capable of processing ambiguous information. During a pandemic or similar period, the study assists decision makers in determining a new route. The findings will also call business managers' attention to logistical pressure factors and lead them toward more realistic and feasible practices in the logistics decision-making process.

Originality/value

This study provided an effective and applicable solution to a decision-making problem in the logistics sector including logistics pressure factors and the selection of logistics decisions. In this context, a methodology was presented that will allow businesses to self-evaluate their own logistics pressure factors and the selection of optimal solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

Describes how the German dual system of education and vocational training is being adopted by travel operator Tui in Turkey.

Design/methodology/approach

Describes the experiences of two employees at the Robinson Club who are benefiting from the dual system of training and provides information from the human resources (HR) manager responsible for training.

Findings

Explains that, apart from being taught by the Robinson Club experts and state schools, trainees spend another year training at the club, with additional modules and then an external examination, which enables them to obtain the certificate of equivalence meaning their qualification is also recognized in Germany. Additional topics covered by the course include marketing, sourcing and more in-depth knowledge about service and kitchen work.

Practical implications

Reveals that, to make the Robinson education project happen, Tui is working with the Turkish education ministry, the German pubic-employment service [(ZAV) (the cross-border agency for skilled labor)], the chamber of trade and industry in Hanover and und. Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG) and the German investment and development company.

Social implications

Highlights the particular value of the training when considered against the background of high unemployment in Turkey.

Originality/value

Gives the inside story of how the German dual-training model is being exported abroad.
